Yousef
"Friends" [Carioca]

Pitched somewhere between an album and an EP, the friends set is what happened when Yousef and his, err, Friends got together. And fear not, this isn’t a collection of illicit photos from what happened on a night out on the tiles with the circus supremo, but instead a collection of house tracks from people he’s admired and struck up a relationship with over the years. Mighty relief indeed then.

It’s all strictly house music, and for people outside the djs and music aficionado spectrum there’s little to get your teeth into, but that’s probably not the intention of the release. Lovers of sexy four-four grooves will no doubt lap it up, old favorites like the Circus Parade, this time with a new re-edit, feature alongside newer material, and there are some standouts. “Chords are rubbing”, the collaboration with Blackpool house bod Blakkat, is one of the more delightful cuts, a groovy bassline interspersed with, oddly enough, some mournful chords. “Do Me” as well benefits from the oddball electronic influence of basics don Paul Woolford, giving a more robotic and tech edged feel to the selection, which is mainly focused on the more US house led stuff that Yousef has built his reputation on. And the Gene Farris cut “Da Number 8” is a nice laidback acidic chugger, featuring both here in its original vocal form and now with an instrumental for those who are scared of the odd word here and there.

Underground hip hop heads aren’t going to be converted, but there’s a decent enough selection of bustling house music to keep Yousef’s friends happy, and win him a few more.
