Various Disco not Disco: Post Punk, Electro & Leftfield Disco Classics 1974-1986 [Strut]Strut revive their Disco not disco series after the series which, first released at the turn of the century, now stands poised as the post punk era is held as one of the most creative in musical history. Angling a series of leftfield disco grooves and abstract punk funk, the legacy of this particular brand of music is felt warmly in the work of LCD Soundsystem and the DFA, Lindstrom and bands like the Rapture and Radio 4. On offer here is some of the better and further out cuts from the 1974-1986 periods, and there’s some beauts nestling amongst them. Quando Quango’s ‘Love Tempo’ breaks out from a menacing acid percussive click into a horn led groover, a low slung masterpiece with enough whimsical effects, cow bells and nonchalant vocal chanting to get James Murphy’s palms sweating. Then there’s the mock menace of Kazino’s ‘Binary’ , all dark synths and ridiculous vocals which encapsualtes the balance of parody and dancefloor nous that sums up the best italo, a feat similarly mirrored by Liaisons Dangereuses’ ‘Los Ninos Del Parque’. Elsewhere cuts from Yellow Magic Orchestra, Shriekback and A Number of Names’ timeless ‘Sharevari’ throw up enough kooky surprises and angular rhythms to leave fans satisfied and new devotes clamouring for more. A superb insight into a period of time that should always remain celebrated... go seek Soupers.
