King Britt / Various The Cosmic Lounge [!K7]King Britt’s status is electronic music is certifiably high, since his early work as part of the Digibale Planets collective his output has spanned hip-hop, deep house, afro-tech and strung out broken beats. His superlative take on Josh One’s ‘Contemplation’ transformed a moody smoky hip-hop track into a slice of sun kissed Balearic house brilliance, an instant classic that has recently been revived by many a Dj as deep house swings back into vogue. Such lofty status naturally draws attention to any new release, as King Britt once again affirms his musical mastermind reputation by unearthing a series of rare jazz cuts for this comp. Nestled firmly in the more abstract and experimental of Britt’s indulgences, what’s on offer is a glimpse into his psyche with a number of often difficult but certainly never dull records which push the boundaries of musical conception. Herbie Hancock’s homage to Africa and the furtherment of the black community ‘Kawaida’ starts proceedings, with cuts from Mtume, Don Cherry and flora Purim continuing the remit. Whilst this certainly isn’t for the casual observer, it’s a rewarding selection of intense music for those looking to operate beyond the usual.
