Dave Seaman

Dave Seamen continues to be at the avant-garde of electronica, and his Therapy Sessions Mix showcases this. We got a quick Q&A with the man ahead of the release.

You once worked as editor of Mixmag. Having first hand seen the way Dance music journalism was, how do you think it stands up in this modern age of internet and blogs?

“It's impossible to compare the two to be honest. What was going on back then is so different to what is going on now. It's like comparing a Manchester United team from the 1960s to a Manchester United team now, its two very different era's. Back in late 80s we were just making it up as we went along. So much of it was driven by enthusiasm whereas now there is a lot more cynicism. Everyone has an opinion and you can't get away from it. Everything is of its own era so it's difficult to compare.”

Having a career that has spanned the entirety of acid house, how healthy is the scene right now compared to other eras?

“The Scene is always healthy. The fashion and business side of it goes through cycles but if you want to find great artists and great clubs you always will, it's always out there. Although I am not a journalist anymore, I don't analyse these things so you tell me!”

How are things going at the label these days?

“It's going really well now. we had a bit of a sticky patch with Amato going bust at the end of 2007 but it was quite good for us because we regrouped and had a proper look at things so 2008 has started off positively. There are fewer labels since the Amato bust but that's meant we are inundated with good music at the moment. Also, people are prepared to take less money for their tracks because they realise having a good track is worth its weight in gold when it comes to gigs and profile.”

What's your standpoint on the digital vs. Vinyl debate, and how do you see yourself presenting music?

“Digital is more adaptable and easy to organise, for me it's more about the debate of whether I should use CDJs or computers. I don't really trust computers at the best of times, what if it crashes in a club!? Plus I quite like that old school feeling of putting in the cds and cueing them up and beat matching. I don't even think about vinyl anymore. Is there even a debate about vinyl anymore? Some people may argue that the sound quality is slightly better but in a club you can't really tell.”

What DJs and producers are pushing your aural buttons at the moment?

“Well, the 2 that are really top of their game are Dubfire and Eric Prydz. They are consistently making great music.”

What lies in the future for David Seaman?

“My Master series for Renaissance is out on March 10th I've been doing loads of press! Renaissance has got this new press girl who is working me hard at the minute! Ha. I'll be touring lots and I'm looking forward to my WMC gig for Shine at the Shelburne. I am also finishing my own single Goobledygook which is out early May, it'll be floating around in Miami too.”
