Infinite Monkey Project

It’s about time Shakespeare and theories concerning our monkey cousins had its place in dance music, so put your hands together for a revolutionary new way of creating new tunes. The Infinite Monkey Project aim to put together tracks through applying a theory from 1913 to today’s advanced technology and millions of budding lyricists around Europe.

Heard of the theorist Borel-Cantelli? Probably not, but this clever bloke of his day announced that, “Due to the nature of infinity, a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard will almost surely eventually type every book in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France.” Having also taking into account that it is stated that ‘an infinite number of monkeys given an infinite number of typewriters would eventually type the complete works of Shakespeare’, the Infinite Monkey Project updates these theories using T9 technology.

Although T9 may sound unfamiliar, you have probably already used their software. They are responsible for predictive text on mobile phones and palm pilots, so you could say that the kings of predictive gadgetry are predicting the next big dance hit! Joining forces with some of the most talented European acts, the Infinite Monkey theory will be put to the test by enlisting the public as the monkeys to create the lyrics of a song.

Quite fancy yourself as a wordsmith? Well, text any one word to the website (www.infinitemonkeyproject.com) bearing in mind that common words like ‘if’, ‘and’ or ‘the’ will increase your chances of being included in the final song. These words will then be collected as they arrive onto the system and when any grammatically correct (but not necessarily sensible) sentences are formed, they will be short-listed for the final track. When the artists involved have enough content, they will produce the final song for download release and ta da…! Now there’s a heavy collaboration that rivals anything from Diddy and Snoop.

So what’s in it for the users? Anyone who contributed lyrics that ended up in the final product will be contacted by their text number and automatically qualify for a ‘reward’. Depending on whether the song hits the top 10 in your country, royalties will be distributed to contributors along with a CD as a memento. After the artists involved get their share of the pie, the royalty cheque you receive probably won’t have you running to the bank to cash your first million but you will be classed as a published songwriter!

It’s been a hard task to seek out the best acts out to represent the project from a rich European dance scene, but the artists that have been chosen have musical expertise spanning a range of genres and influences. Sparo from the UK and Italy will spearhead the scheme alongside nine-piece group Babamars representing Germany, Alex and Tomy for Spain and Inabeathead for France. Agreed it sounds like the Eurovision Song Contest, but this monkey business is set to have a very interesting outcome, and it might just reveal a little something about the nation’s consciousness too!
