Loco Dice Interview by Jimmy Coultas
Ahead of his gig at Circus, we got to grips with German minimal maestro Loco Dice, about DC10, the German music revolution and his hip-hop past. Turns out he’s not got much affection for the media hype process… "You’re scheduled to play at circus in a couple of weeks. Is this your first time in Liverpool, and what do you expect from the crowd when you play? As a DJ yes the first time, I’ve been there before but to visit Yousef with timo who had a gig there, I know that liverpudlians (I think that’s what they call themselves) know how to party. "Having started out as a rapper on the German hip-hop scene, do you still show love to this music and is there any plans to get back on the microphone again? I am hip hop and I’m proud it’s the background I’m coming from.... I’m still down with my old hip hop homiez and you always find me checking out the hip hop clubs. I’m still buying hip hop records like Oliver Bondzio from hardfloor, not as a dj but I’m still down and maybe one day I’ll return to the mic for a joke - who knows??? "Germany is pretty much the centre of the universe at the minute in terms of forward thinking, evocative electronic music. What is it about the country that seems to be striking such a chord with lovers of electronic music? The ‘Germans’ like Sven, Ricardo, Steve Pascal...they've always been doing there music and it's stupid to over hype it or saying Germany is the centre in the world, this is how good things get destroyed. Look at it like this, there’s been always good music in Germany, these producers have always done their own thing. See I’m playing a lot of stuff from the 90´and it works big time. We are on one point where the circle has closed or we've arrived at the beginning and everybody is excited again, microclubbing is back ...these djs/artists have never really followed music hype they just kept it real doing what they are doing and you u can call it minimal, techno, deep house or whatever. But it’s just real electronic music... "The minimal sound explosion has started to come across so much more in clubs in the UK over the past year or so. Is it nice that it’s finally starting to get some recognition? I’m a kind of scared how fast things can happen but minimal music was always there - remember Plasticman or baby ford back in the days and they are still here. I also hate this word minimal the UK media is overrating this; it’s always been there but not so much in everyone’s face. I hope the people will understand that when you hear a bleep or a bang u don’t have to call it minimal. I see that everybody is trying to change their set around 100% to be like magda or luciano. I don’t think this is right, everybody should freshen up their set and be true to themselves. Just because 3 DJ's in DC 10 drop a Perlon record it doesn’t mean that everybody has to do the same. But it’s nice to see that this sound has woken up and created an interest from some people. "You mention DC10 there. It is pretty much being perceived as the coolest club in Ibiza right now. How do you feel about this happening? DC 10 was always a cool club and will be always be even with you guys hyping it to death because it’s fucking real!!!!! I’m happy for Andréa Antonio and Cirillo because they believe in the music from day one so they deserve this RESPECT!!! "And finally, what’s your dream remix or production partner? I’ve found him already, Martin Buttrich (also timo maas’ production partner)!!! But I do wish I could do something with Martin and guys like Dr. Dre, Timberland, Teddy Riley, Prince, Santana, or Roger Troutman. I’d like that.
